baudrillard and mccarthy [no. 13]

This week I really invested time into Paul McCarthy, diving deep into his artistic practices. As a contemporary artist he is mainly known for his performance art and sculpture but also spends a fair amount of time doing installations and film. In the most recent post for the New Media in Art blog site it was said that McCarthy's most recent works have been in virtual reality. At 74 years old McCarthy is still expanding his understanding of the medium, or in this case media.

McCarthy's work has always seemed to transcend into the hyperreality that Baudrillard explains. A critical analysis of one's own work. "Painter" (McCarthy) makes me think about how individuals are their own worst critics. Being hard on yourself as a creative is something that is overanalyzed here. I believe it creates a hyperreality in and of itself as if being a creative or producing work is even worth it if the artist is going to be so self critical. In this way you hurt and hinder the process of production.
