john cage: an 'antisocial' individual

John Cage was an incredible pioneer of the avant-garde soundscape. Through the unconventional use of instruments and found objects Cage created environments in which individuals were ready to listen.

Marshal McLuhan mentions him in his own text; The Medium Is The Massage. Cage is contained within McLuhan's philosophies because of how he uses 'antisocial actions'. "The poet, the artist, the sleuth-whoever sharpens our perception tends to be antisocial; rarely 'well-adjusted' he cannot go along with currents and trends.

Although Cage was classically trained as a composer and in the traditional use of instruments he ventured further into the unknown world of being 'antisocial'.

Cage created the notion of the 'Prepared Piano'. A piano that has been temporarily altered in order to create different often 'exotic' and percussive sounds.

John Cage lit up the world of music as he created his soundscapes. Cage truly reminds everyone that "Everything we do is music." He also lets everyone know that they are "in the best seat". To experience 'The Now' as a creative is something incredible and thanks to the medium we can know record the sounds it makes.

  1. It is interesting to know that his "antisocial" characteristic is a part helping him creating his arts. I do think that the artists need to be in their own world to create their own trademarks in art.

  2. Hearing that john cage was "anti-social" it makes me wonder what the connection is with people who have a hard time connecting to society and art is. You hear a lot about people who are "anti-social" being creative individuals. Being a person not really educated in music or sound, it was a interesting read.
