maeve jackson: to find the stillness in movement

Maeve Jackson; an intriguing artist and filmmaker from the Midwest that uses the environments around her to create. Jackson uses herself throughout her works as the director, performer, and the editor. During the introduction of her projected works she emphasized that her work entails largely the experience of "Being a human in a new space." I connected with this because it makes me really think about McLuhan's ways of thinking. As the medium massages our brain into behaving or acting in particular ways we are constantly experiencing media as a new space in which we are existing and acting in specific ways. These ways can be candid, organic, or even controlled and forceful.

The way in which she mentions movement is an entire element that she discusses by itself. Sculptures she included in her exhibition were television sets in wheelbarrows. This was especially intriguing to me because it made me feel nostalgic. Wheelbarrows and the TV were two very big parts of my childhood. The televisions were playing a scene of a continuous train ride as the countryside moves in and out of frame. Movement is present. She also designed the frames of her photographs like the frames of a bee box container. This design makes it easier for her to pack them away into a box and transport them to other locations. Movement is present. She also introduced several photographs of people who have moved physically to a different country, or environment.

The talk itself is truly about finding the stillness in the movement she creates. Her gallery exhibitions were dedicated to the memory of a late friend. Jackson's work overall uses the medium to massage our ways of thinking about our own stillness that we may experience in motion.

  1. When you mentioned that her art is a representation of "Being a human in a new space" something clicked. Looking at her work its becomes clear that her work would not have been created if it was not her will to go out of her way to explore a new world. Going somewhere new and experiencing life there seems scary, but it seems like a really good tool for artists to get inspiration for their work.

  2. I did not notice the beauty of movement in her talk until you mentioned it. I also believe that movement is important in filming and thanks for mentioning about it.

  3. I thought that the televisions were pretty interesting, but it's cool to hear that it caused nostalgia. Maeve was able to capture movement in such a unique form.
